For this assignment I chose to map out some of the most popular tourist sites in various cities. The four that I chose were The Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth, The National Mall in Washington D.C., The John Hancock Tower in Chicago, and The Santa Monica Pier in of course, Santa Monica. I chose these 4 for one specific reason. I’ve been to them all!! Each place on my map includes a photo taken by me! I have been to each other these locations in the past two years so everything is pretty up to date. I love traveling so I tend to have an infatuation with tourist attractions. I always make it a point to see the most popular places in each destination. For the research portion, I originally wanted to look into how much money each place generated through tourism. But this information was so hard to find!! First off, three out of four of these are free! The lighthouse, the National Mall, and Pier are all free to observe. There are ways of making money, like the restaurants on the pier or donations at museums, but for the most part it was really hard to find any information. I decided to switch to seasonality and how weather affects the popularity of these sites. The info I found was pretty interesting but pretty predictable in my mind. I added links to each place so you can read more if you want! I think overall this was an interesting assignment and a new way to look at things. I have never used Google Maps for anything other than directions. I am excited to look at others and learn a bit about them!! I loved each of these places so I hope you all get a chance to visit.
